What Do I Need in My Outdoor Kitchen?
As a survivalist, you have to be ready for almost anything – including cooking outside. Whether you’re bugging out to a different location or you’re bugging in and don’t want to spend precious resources on cooking when you have other options to do so, learning how to cook outside and put together an outdoor kitchen is actually a big deal, and you want to make sure that you have everything you need in order to prepare your food in a safe and healthy manner, no matter what circumstances you are in.
Why an Outdoor Kitchen?
Why would you even need an outdoor kitchen in the first place? Can’t you just use the kitchen in your home? If you’re bugging out, then you won’t have your kitchen to use, and you will likely need to put one together in order to make sure that you are able to prepare your food in a safe and healthy manner. Sometimes, there’s room for you to put a kitchen in your bug out shelter, but many times, you’ll want to spare the space and do an outdoor kitchen instead.
If you’re bugging in, you may find it better to do an outdoor kitchen because that means that you don’t have to use any of the electric, gas, or any other power supply that you may need for other important items. By having an outdoor kitchen, you automatically give yourself another option for cooking, and you don’t have to worry about wasting precious resources that you will already have a limited supply of. It’s all about being creative and improvising. An outdoor kitchen is also good if the kitchen area of your home isn’t able to be used for one reason or another (natural disaster, etc).
What Should I Have?
First off, you want to make sure that you have something to cook on. It could be a grill, it could be a fire pit, it could even be a little stove thing that you’ve put together somehow. The most important thing is that you have something that you are able to use so that your food is safe when you cook it. Some outdoor kitchen setups will even utilize solar power in order to be able to cook the food, and this is also an option if you can find the right things to do so with.
Then, you want to make sure that you have an area where you can get the food ready. Once again, hygiene and food safety is important, so you want to make sure that everything is clean and that you are able to keep the area as sanitary as you possibly can. In a survival situation, you want to do everything possible to make sure that you and your family stay healthy and do not get sick, because that will make things a lot more difficult for you all to deal with in the long run.
Lastly, you want all sorts of supplies that you can use in your outdoor kitchen. You want to have the basics that you would find in any kitchen, like eating utensils and preparing utensils, pots and pans, dish cloths, and whatever else you may need in order to prepare food. A cutting board is always a good idea, so that you can make sure that the foods you’re getting ready are going to be able to be cut without damaging the area you’re using for preparation.
And that’s it. It’s not a really difficult thing to put together; if you’ve put together your indoor kitchen, you only have to make a few changes in order to put together an outdoor kitchen that you can use in an emergency situation. The biggest difference is that you will have to make sure that you can transport the items easily, so you want them to not take up a lot of space and you want them to be very easy to carry. That way, if you have to move for some reason or you are already planning on going from one place to another, you will be able to do so without a lot of hassle.
